Gettysburg EnergyWorks

The Gettysburg Energy and Nutrient Recovery Facility, which is owned by EnergyWorks BioPower (York Springs, Pennsylvania), is one such facility that has found clever ways of generating electricity. The facility collects the chicken litter from a nearby egg-processing plant and use it as a fuel to operate a Victory Boiler to produce steam to operate an Elliott steam turbine, which then provides 3.24 megawatts of renewable energy to the local grid.

The facility provides approximately 3,000 homes with renewable energy. The nearby Hillandale farm houses more than 3.5 million chickens, which produce 240 tons of manure per day. The facility also reduces the environmental impact in terms of the amount of waste runoff into lakes, streams, rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay after heavy rains. IBEW Local 229 along with York PA electrical contractor I.B. Abel, Inc. is proud to have been a part of constructing this first of its kind plant.
